"My teeth are beautiful... enabling me to eat all my favourite foods"

Dear Finlay, Claire, Rowan and Sarah

I am writing to say how delighted I am with the excellent treatment and quality of care I have received as your patient over the past 12 months. I am thrilled with the final outcome which looks beautiful, has restored my confidence and far exceeded my greatest expectations. Increasingly anxious, lacking confidence and embarrassed by the deteriorating state of my teeth and gums and receiving only negative comments from my NHS dentist, I seriously believed that I may have to face the future with neither teeth nor gums and so was prompted to seek advice and help elsewhere.

The range of high level qualifications, expertise and experience of the practitioners described on the website was very impressive and I felt confident that this practice was the best equipped to make an accurate assessment of my problems and to suggest possible solutions.

At the first consultation, I was given a warm and friendly welcome from Claire and Finlay who helped me to feel at ease from the outset. Following the examination, I was immediately reassured that I was not a hopeless case and that something could be done to solve my problems. It soon became clear that Finlay, Rowan and the team take great pride in their work, are committed to providing the best for their patients and are people who I could trust.

Although the treatment involved several visits over a period of months it is true to say that, contrary to visits from previous dentist, I actually welcomed and looked forward to them- friendly pleasant experiences! I was treated with great care and respect always and was always fore-warned of even the tiniest pinprick or possibility of discomfort. Even the extraction of all my upper and half of my lower teeth was painless, amazing!

A temporary denture was fitted immediately and I came home with medication and detailed after care instructions. My permanent denture was fitted several weeks ago and is truly fabulous. I had always expected an aesthetically pleasing denture but believed that it would always feel like a foreign body in my mouth and that some foods would be impossible to eat. How wrong I was! It is so comfortable and feels a natural part of me. My teeth are beautiful, give added structure to my face and are extremely efficient enabling me to eat all my favourite foods.

I am so grateful to benefit from the excellent skills, techniques and care which I have received.

Finlay presents Dentures - aesthetics versus function, what's important?

The Dentistry Show

Friday March 2nd 2012 10.00am – 11.00am

Producing dentures, which have superb aesthetics and excellent function, is technically demanding. Getting one of these aspects right often has a negative impact on the other. Finlay presented how he and his dental technician (Rowan Garstang) meet this challenge. This talk was abundantly illustrated with photographs of cases they have treated. The presentation was full of practical advice.

Learning outcomes/objectives

The aim of the presentation was for the delegates to have an increased understanding of the following technical and clinical aspects of removable denture fabrication and how they can be applied to optimise denture aesthetics and function:

  • Making excellent primary and secondary impressions
  • Correct special tray extensions
  • Smile design with and without dentate photographs
  • The best occlusal schemes for dentures
  • Straight forward jaw registration and facebow techniques
  • The benefits of finishing the dentures on master cast duplicates and refitting the processed dentures to the mounted master casts

Peter loves his new teeth

Dear All,

Just a short note of thanks for all your help over the last year.

To say I was apprehensive at our first appointment would be the understatement of the year. I have never liked going to a dentist and did not know what to expect. Even after the first appointment I knew it was the right decision to continue with the treatment. Everyone made me feel relaxed and was very professional in their manner and the level of explanation of what the treatment would be.

I remember driving down the motorway at a great rate of knots, to the second appointment. On arrival I thought to myself, “This is unusual, rushing to get to the dentist”.

I have never had any pain after any appointment, could be just luck, but I believe it is due to the care I received from you. Even after the intrusive work was carried out there was no pain at all.

Besides the cosmetic look, having had the treatment it has certainly increased my confidence not only in me but also when interacting with others.

For anyone who is considering some form of dental work I would and will certainly recommend you and your staff. If anyone is apprehensive at all, please feel free to contact me and I will do my best to put them at ease.

Again, a big big thanks for what you have all done for me, it is much appreciated.

Best Wishes,

Peter

Kate Blundell's a star - a wonderful patient testimonial

Well, what can I say about you Kate. Nothing but praise. You are the most gentle, calm, quietly spoken, caring and efficient dental practitioner I have ever come across.

I needed a canal root filling at the top back area of my mouth, through a bridge. The thought to me was horrendous and I was very nervous and upset at the thought of this treatment.

Upon meeting you and during the consultation, I felt immediately comfortable, and at ease. Your patience with me was second to none.

Your work ethics and work standard is exemplary. You spent 2 hours constantly working on my tooth explaining what was going on as you went through the procedure, which I found very comforting. I felt no pain whatsoever and was eternally grateful for that.

You were constantly aware when I got fidgety, through lying back for such a long time and, without any ‘signals’ from me, gave me a ‘sit up break’.

I was so in awe of how efficient you were and I must also mention Sarah, your assistant, she also was the most caring dental nurse I have ever met.

You worked extremely well as a team I felt and I appreciate what you both did for me during my ordeal, which I hasten to add, ended up not being an ordeal, thanks to you.

THANK YOU KATE, you are a star in my eyes and I feel every patient you encounter will agree once they have been in your presence and experienced the efficient way in which you approach your dental treatment.

I wish you and Sarah well in the future. Keep up the good work.

Patient testimonial

December 12th 2011

Dear Finlay and the Specialist Team,

Words seem inadequate in trying to express my thanks and appreciation for all the many hours of work you have put in for my benefit: not only the time given to my appointments but also the planning and specialist technical work involved behind the scenes.

It all began when I filled in a detailed form expressing my dental concerns and my “Wish List”. I didn’t expect all of my wishes to be realised, but magically you have worked wonders, which speak abundantly of your expertise and passionate desire to achieve dental perfection.

It’s amazing that I have my natural smile (from 54 years ago) restored – albeit with wrinkles! Once again I can enjoy a normal diet which I had previously abandoned.

Your courtesy, kindness and concern for my well being, dental and otherwise have restored my confidence and I am most grateful to each and everyone for the friendly, positive and encouraging atmosphere you create at The Lancashire Specialist Dental Practice – you are all truly “special”.

Mrs AB

Full arch immediate loading on dental implants

Presentation - Thursday, 26 January 2012 (2 free hours of verifiable CPD)

Reserve your place (this link will take you to our Facebook page - please be quick as places are limited)

I'll be presenting full arch immediate loading on dental implants along with Richard Oliver, Specialist in Oral Surgery.

Fast and fixed CT scanThe evening will start with a buffet at 6.30pm which will be followed by our presentation on the Bredent fast and fixed full arch implant immediate loading system at 7.00pm. This system enables patients who have a failing dentition to have fixed replacement teeth straight away without needing to wear an interim partial denture. Another advantage of this technique is that it eliminates the need for large bone graft procedures.

The following techniques will be illustrated with the use of photographs and videos:
  • Planning including the use of a Cone Beam CT scan
  • Extractions and implant placement
  • Impression technique
  • Laboratory stages
  • Fitting of the provisional bridge
  • ensuring passive fit
  • Production and fitting of the definitive bridge
Objectives of the presentation
  1. To provide information on this novel system
  2. To provide information regarding the indications for this technique
  3. To provide information on the evidence base for this technique
The evening provides 2 free hours of verifiable CPD for all dental team members. Certificates of attendance will be provided.

The restorative management of the bruxist patient - a dental nightmare

BDA Lancaster and Morecambe Section 9th November 2011

It was an absolute pleasure giving this presentation, as the audience were so interactive and the venue was the lovely Refreshment Room, where Brief Encounter (the 1945 film) was made. This is a difficult topic because the management of these patients can be very complicated. Treating a patient who bruxes (clenches and grinds their teeth) presents many challenges because the forces placed on their teeth can exceed 1000 Newtons. In this presentation I discussed the diagnosis and management of these cases. Bruxist patients’ who have been treated with composites (white fillings), crowns (caps), bridges, dentures and splints were shown. Techniques for increasing the longevity of these restorations were discussed.

The presentation was illustrated with photographs of cases I have treated with Rowan Garstang my dental technician.

Learning Outcomes

The aim of this presentation was for attendees to have an increased understanding of the following aspects of bruxism and tooth wear:
  • Bruxism – and the huge forces patients can place on the teeth
  • how to manage bruxism, when the condition cannot be cured
  • the importance of communication with patients who have this condition
  • designing restorations to withstand the massive loads generated.

Very special lower denture: Swinglock design

In Gratitude

My mother was born in 1894 with a small mouth, the bottom jaw being larger then the top jaw. This defect passed to myself and one of my three daughters. I am now eighty years old with areas of my mouth receding.

In 2009 I had new dentures at which time I was 10 stone 4 pounds. In 2011 this weight had dropped to 8 stone 1 pound. I regarded this, rather sadly, as a decline in old age.

I was then referred to this specialist dental practice, with only a vague hope that anything could be improved.

On my first visit the practice staff were full of welcome, with comfortable waiting areas and cups of tea after my journey. The surgery was superb, large and full of modern equipment. It was lit by huge windows, but the top of the accolade was the verbal welcome from Finlay and Claire.

After examinations Finlay clearly explained all that was to happen. He wrote a report on my teeth for me to study.

Finlay was socially warm and gentle and after several visits I found him to have enormous enthusiasm for the work he did, being totally committed to me as his patient. All through the treatment, I felt he was enjoying what he did. He gave clear explanations in this wonderfully tranquil atmosphere. Each members care and enthusiasm was either natural to them, a result of training or as I thought a large part of being influenced by the right organisation of the practice and Finlay and Rowans aim to get it perfect. Rowans ability to advise and adjust to whatever technical problems there were in my mouth was so impressively accurate.

It all fitted together beautifully with no discomfort, producing built up dentures to level my mouths default and refilling old cavities. This produced a natural cosmetic appearance similar to the photograph of my face when I was married 55 years ago.

For reversing my weight and making a great improvement in my looks and confidence I am full of gratitude to Finlay, Rowan and the rest of the team.

Yours sincerely,
Hilda

Diagnosis, planning and delivery of partial dentures

BACDT presentation Friday 16th September 2011 LonDec

Partial DenturesI presented our philosophy for the provision of partial dentures, in a specialist referral practice with a dedicated on-site dental laboratory. In this lecture the patient’s initial interview and examination were covered in detail. The significance of the diagnosis from interpretation of clinical and radiographic findings was discussed. Presenting the diagnoses and treatment solutions clearly to the prospective patient was covered. If patients understand exactly what is entailed in the treatment they are much more likely to take it up.

My partial denture design philosophy was covered using clinical cases as examples. Impression making techniques was discussed, as well as recording the occlusion in patients with difficult to find occlusal relationships. Positioning the artificial teeth in as close as possible relationship to the natural predecessors was demonstrated. This was a very practical and clinical presentation.

Learning Outcomes

The aim of this presentation was for delegates (Clinical Dental Technicians) to have an increased understanding of the following aspects of partial denture provision:
  • Initial consultation and examination
  • Diagnosis of teeth pathology and denture supporting tissues
  • Planning for the future, such as tooth loss after the provision of a partial denture
  • Making excellent primary and secondary impressions
  • When to use a gothic arch tracing for jaw registration
  • Natural and aesthetically pleasing tooth positioning

Root filling (endodontic) testimonial with pre and post operative radiographs

Dear Dr Milner,

I am writing to let you know that since your recent work on my teeth, I have had no further pain and the procedure you undertook seems to have been an unqualified success.

The whole process was entirely painless and you went to considerable trouble to tell me what you were going to do and what to expect.

My local dentist who referred me to you clearly believed in your ability and in the ‘state of the art’ equipment you employ.  I can only say that I think he is fully justified.

Thank you for what you have done.

Mr J W

Replacement implant supported canine

My Experience - Patient Testimonial

I was referred to the Practice by my dentist because of a failed crown, which could not be repaired and the alternatives were to leave a space, have a single tooth denture or have an implant retained crown. Because the missing tooth is the upper right canine, having a gap was not something I wanted and a previous experience with a single tooth denture meant that this wasn't likely to be along term solution for me.

I had an initial consultation with Finlay, which was extremely thorough and was carried out in a manner which gave me confidence. I was able to discuss the options and was subsequently provided with a detailed treatment plan which enabled me to consider what I wanted to do. The treatment was complicated by the nature of my smile and whilst a straightforward implant would have been possible, I accepted the recommendation of a tissue graft at the implant site. This extended the length of the treatment, but the final result is well worth the wait.

The extraction, implant placement and graft were all carried out under intravenous sedation. This was administered by the Practice's Consultant Anaesthetist and both he and Finlay took time to explain what was involved and ensured that I was happy with what was going to happen. The sedation itself was the perfect way to enable the treatment to take place. As the sedative was administered I began to feel “fuzzy” and the next thing I was aware of was when Finlay was coming to the end of the procedure.

I was provided with a detailed post treatment plan and the necessary medication. Whilst I had some discomfort in the days immediately following the procedure, ordinary painkillers were adequate and I was able to return to work after a couple of days.

Once the tissue graft had healed, I was provided with a denture for aesthetic purposes. Whilst this was fine for the short period involved, it confirmed my view that a denture would not have been a satisfactory long term solution for me.

The period from the initial consultation to the final checkup was about seven months, but the final result is well worth it and I'm completely satisfied with the outcome and able to smile with confidence again!

Throughout the treatment, Finlay ensured that I understood what he was proposing to do and that I had the opportunity to ask questions if I was unsure about anything. The professionalism and attitude of Finlay and his team made the whole experience as “enjoyable” as such a complex process can be.

'Total information' in your treatment plan

No two situations are identical and treatment must be tailored for each individual condition. Every patient has a unique dental problem and as a result each treatment plan is personalised for each situation. The level of investment necessary depends upon the complexity of the work needed. Each patient is assessed individually and a specific treatment plan, with fee estimate produced.

Here are some comments regarding treatment planning from Ms. B, who is currently being treated by Finlay.
Dear Finlay,
Thank you very much indeed for your letter including so much information regarding your diagnosis and treatment plan for my dental well being and 'total information!'.
My visit to your practice was enlightening and uplifting; your enthusiastic offer of help, your knowledge and professionalism and that of your team have given me new hope.
With much gratitude,
Ms. B

Replacement teeth in a day?

You can have replacement teeth in a day, here at the Finlay Sutton Partnership. Yesterday we did just that for one of our patients.

His new teeth are secured on 6 dental implants. The implants are placed using local anaesthetic and sedation, which guarantees the procedure is totally pain free and comfortable. The patient was absolutely thrilled with the result.

I have the most amazing team in place to perform this advanced treatment. Richard Oliver (Specialist in Oral Surgery) placed the implants and Rowan Garstang, my on site dental technician made the teeth. I co-ordinate the treatment and do the prosthodontics.

This technique has been developed by bredent medical in Germany. For more information on this technique including supporting scientific literature, visit the bredent website.

Another very happy patient

"I just wanted to say a big thank you to you, Finlay, and the whole team which has grown considerably during my two year course of treatment.

I think I must have been one of your longest running patients and yet, because of the care and skill of all of you, the two years of appointments passed surprisingly quickly and painlessly.

Numerous dental implants, crowns and bridges later, I am a ‘new woman’.

I can laugh and smile with confidence and I may even let people take my photograph now.

Many thanks again to you and Claire, Rowan, Richard, Sarah and Charlotte.

Very best wishes for the future."
